Careful Removal of the Affected Shower Area

When a leaking shower requires a shower pan repair or replacement, the next step is carefully opening the affected area so the existing waterproofing system and underlying conditions can be evaluated.

Depending on the scope of the repair, this may include removing the shower door, shower floor, and the necessary lower rows of wall tile to expose the existing shower pan while preserving as much of the remaining shower as practical.

Exposing the Existing Shower Pan

Once the finished materials are removed, the existing shower pan and waterproofing system can be exposed. This gives us a clearer view of the conditions that were hidden beneath the tile.

Failed waterproofing, deterioration, improper preparation, and other issues may not become fully visible until demolition has taken place.

Inspecting the Area Below

After the existing shower pan is removed, we inspect the exposed area before installing the new system.

If damaged or deteriorated materials are discovered, they can be identified before the shower is covered again. Any additional repairs outside the original scope can then be discussed before moving forward.

Preparing for the New Shower Pan

Once demolition and the necessary preparation are complete, the shower area is cleaned and prepared for the next stage of the project.

The goal is to create a properly prepared foundation for the new shower pan, pre-slope and waterproofing system rather than installing new materials over an existing problem.

With the failed materials removed and the shower area properly prepared, the project can move forward to one of the most important stages of the entire process: preparing the shower pan and establishing the proper pre-slope before waterproofing.
